There are millions of students applying to a university each year, that makes it millions of personal essay. If someone were to copy the exact personal statement what are the chances of them being caught. Let's say I've a friend who applied to UC Berkeley but he didn't apply to UW, technically UW won't be able to see what UC received, if I were to send this essay to UW. Would UW know?.

Assuming both the university asks the same topic essay.

Most likely, they won't know. However, it's really not a good idea to copy someone else's writing. If you otherwise have a shot at UW I'm sure you're intelligent enough to make your own worthy essay. Good luck.

The chances of being caught might be slim in that respect, but it is a rather stupid thing to even consider doing! Plagiarism is not taken lightly at any university so, if you did get caught, you can guarantee that any chance of gaining admission would go right out the door and if you were admitted and then they found out before the start of classes, they would cancel your enrollment and make a note of it on any files they had on you! They will also contact your references that you gave you letters of recommendation to let them know what you did and give them a thumbs up to think twice before writing you a new recommendation for another school. Just do not even try this. Take the time and effort to write and submit your own essay and then stand proudly on your own two feet when they do decide to admit you on your own intelligence and personal statement.

I hadn't heard that universities were putting personal statements through turn-it-in.com, but theoretically they could do that since so many schools are now using that system for student papers. It seems unlikely that both schools would use the same topic, and it seems like an unbelievably stupid thing to do. If you can't write a personal statement, what makes you think you could handle college at all?

Don't you think that a little honesty on your part would help mold your character? Aren't your words good enough for you to write the personal statement of your own, unique to you and no other? Your whole college life and working life afterwards will be created on your ability , your thoughts, your application of knowledge and experiences. So the sooner you start expressing yourself , the more proficient you will become.
