Wow, Der Lange, that is very touching! I, too, love my mom, although she's been gone 4 yrs and 6 months as of today. I learned a lot from her, especially my love of baking, which I am trying to pass on to my many many nieces (since I have no kids of my own). You mom sounds like a damn fine lady. You are one of the lucky ones. I pray her suffering will not be long. For those who still have their moms, in both body and mind, treasure the time you have together. If someone is tired of their mom, just toss her over her and she can be MY new mommy! I miss my mom too Donna!

Lemme put it this way. I was 16, and Dad was in the hospital recovering from his 4th heart attack before the age of 45. There were 7 kids in the house, with me the oldest. At this time, I was on my second full-time, after-school job, and minimum wage then was $1.10 per hour. Mom at that particular point was a full-time parent and housewife, but she had worked since she was 16 and had a great newspaper and radio career when she was younger.

I sat down with her after the latest bill collector had just left our front door. "You have to go back to work," I told her bluntly. "We simply don't have any choices. The other kids and I can take care of the house, and when Dad gets back we'll see to him, too. We won't make it unless you go to work, Mom."

I showed her some articles about a newspaper strike and how the paper involved was hiring replacement staff. "You are a journalist and you can DO this," I told her. "We might hate breaking union lines but there isn't any food in the house."

Mom took that job, in fact she took it that very day. She went on to become, at age 65 (MANY years later), the nation's most popular TV news correspondent covering aging issues.

She always took care of her family. I have dozens more stories like this one, most not involving one of her kids kicking her butt into action. That was a special occasion when life had stunned her.

My siblings remember different things about Mom - mostly, her personality defects and their complaints about her. I remember her iron will and enduring determination.

She's alive, now, but just a body wrapped about an empty brain. She's tiny, rather than the solid woman I knew, and frail, instead of a monument of unrelenting energy. But I remember the woman she was as well as know the one she has become over time.

Heck, yes, I love my Mom.

What a HELL OF A LADY!

Yes. She's 88 now. She has macular degeneration and is almost blind, and has a lot of health issues, but still remains fairly independent and lives in her own house.

It was not easy for her to raise me and my sister, and she had to do it by herself for a couple of years while my father was undergoing treatment for TB. (Back then you went to a sanitarium for treatment.)

She was not always easy to be around and I had to learn to accept certain things but she always loved us and I love her in return. I hope she has a few more years with us. She outlived my dad and most of her siblings. That's a good sign.

Thanks for the question.
