"The Butterfly and the Diving Bell" is exquisite and inspirational filmmaking in much the same way as was the movie "My Left Foot" with Daniel Day Lewis. But then neither really qualifies as your typical Hollywood movie, which is either puerile or sterile and is lacks either immediacy or vitality.
Studio bosses must receive a healthy dose of our contempt, but it seems to me that it is the creative classes themselves, i.e., the scriptwriters, actors, and directors, who are ultimately responsible for this sad state of affairs. This generation is one of the most intellectually and artistically challenged of all time, and it has taken an enormous toll on the credibility of the film/movie medium.
I personally cannot stand ludicrous special effects and CG, and I won't spend the time on movies that rely on these gimmicks as a substitute for a good story that is well acted. Even the best sequels soon become boring, and re-makes are almost universally inferior to the original.
I wish I could say something to cheer you up, but it's difficult to imagine a brighter cinematic future anytime soon. Anyhow, I hope that you are enjoying good weather and good company and that 2008 is a great year for you.
Happy New Year. Tim

I'm just tired of them milking their cash cows
I've never seen a sequel that was better than the first
they usually just ruin the story and the acting is always poor in sequels usually because they just rewrite the first script
just because they add some new special effects doesn't mean the movie is better but many people act like that's enough
as long as people go to the theater to see these films they'll keep making them

Well, there was "What Dreams May Come" - totally original and it bombed. There was "The Sixth Sense". There was the Canadian "Fido" - original, cool - bombed. Then there was "The Truman Show".
Occasionally there are new ideas but Hollywood is a money-making-machine and if they take chances there's no guarantee they'll get a return on their investment. That's why there are so many sequels & remakes. Countless careers can hinge on one colossal flop.

They've got a bunch of morons up there doing I don't know what with the millions that they spend making a movie and just giving us a load of trash. They need some real down to earth for real people with creative ideas instead of those bums.

I don't know what to think about the movie industry. Every now and then they produce a real blockbuster, but for the most part, they are pretty mediocre. I guess the box office will determine the successes and failures.
