Other than buying a used phone from a place like eBay, it means that you won't be tied into a contract where you would have to pay big penalties if you ever want to modify or cancel you service.

Here are some of the current termination penalties the big companies charge :

Hers' why it is a good idea to not have a contract:

and here is a good place to get one without a contract, but still low rates:

Well with prepaid it means no contract, no monthly bills and you are not locked in for 2 years of service so you can cancel your service if you are disatisfied or want to try out another service. Most of the refill cards on prepaid cell phone services last for up to 60 or 90 days so there in no monthly charges like that of contract service.

The only disadvantages of prepaid services is that the cost per minute on a call is extremely high (10 cents or more) and sometimes there is a daily charge whether you use your phone or not. Technically you get more for your minutes and unlimited nights and weekends on a contract service than a prepaid service. Prepaid cell phone service is good for someone who only use their cell phone for emergency and ocassional usages.

If you get a no-contract cell phone, it has many perks, especially if you are a teen.
1. you don't need a credit card/credit history.
2. you can control how much you want to spend on your phone, good for if you dont make too much at work.
3. you are in control, and you can stop using that cell phone whenever you would like. ( unlike a 2 year agreement.)
4. you can easily go to a store like walmart etc. to get minute cards, which are super easy to add on.
5. it sometimes can be cheaper
6. if you get a contract, you are expected to pay a monthly fee. if you have prepaid, then you choose when you want to pay ( just check the regulations and experation dates)
also, many, many MANY cell phone providers are now offering this, like, Verizon Wireless, AT+T(cingular) T-Mobile, Alltel, virgin mobile(powered by sprint), and also other companies are Tracfone(verygood) Boost, (powered by sprint)

when you buy a cell phone with a contract, you are usually locked in for 24 months and forced to pay about $30 per month.

without a contract, you never are obligated to buy anything but the phone

if your talking about a phone on something like ebay.. it most liekly just means that you will be able to use it with your contract and its not associated with a previous contract
