"Hunger" by Knut Hamsun. The first sentence pretty much sums it up: "It was in those days I wandered starving in Kristiania, that strange and wonderful city no one leaves until its mark is set upon him."

Kristiana is now known as Oslo. The main character is a writer with no money, no food, and few prospects. Hamsun won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1920.

Also, any books by Isak Dinesen, such as "Seven Gothic Tales," "Winter's Tales," or "Out of Africa."

For nonfiction, "Ibn al-Haytham: First Scientist" by Bradley Steffens tells the inspiring, true story of a medieval Muslim scholar who overcame bouts of mental illness to develop the scientific method two hundred years before the Europeans learned of it--by reading his books. You can find reviews of the book and read a sample chapter at http://www.ibnalhaytham.net/

The Theif Lord by Funke was good.
The Golden Compass by Phillp Pullman is the way to go. It has the essence of Twilight and it will help you get over the books. (Don't jugde the book by the movie)
