I swear I'm not a freak or pervert. I'm a very mild mannered, first year second grade teacher. However, I was disturbed because last night I dreamed that I was teaching and one of the kids in my class smirked at me. I told her to wipe that smile off her face and she didn't so I smacked her twice.

Then, I looked around the room at other kids doing their usual misbehaviors and i started hitting them as punishment.

One child was like, "Ms. L, you can't hit kids!" and I was like, "Whatever!" and I popped him on the hand.

I know its just a dream, but I was pretty upset when I woke up. Should I seek counseling?

No, your fine. People think about doing that all the time but don't do it or say it.

You were right to be upset, and I commend your fortitude in being so open about this. Certainly teaching is stressful, but never sink to striking students. A warning from your subconscious. Do confide in a trusted faculty member or clinician who is in a better position to observe first-hand, OR, if you came to the web for anonymity--know that first-year jitters are normal, poise and confidence will grow with time. Don't be rash. The memories and the students will haunt for years. Best wishes.

May be, but I would get classroom control management techniques into place. You sound frustrated.

Spend a least the first 2-3 weeks teaching routine to the children, communication codes, like, Look at me. When I talk pencils down and so on.

I had a dream that Godzilla was chasing me and my students and I am pretty sure I do not need counseling. Think about it. It was a dream!
