i am about to change my cd-rom drive and was wondering if there is an alternate for the anti- static electricity wrist starp or if i do not need anything to conduct away the static. I was thinking that if i changed the drive on top of wooden floor it would work but am not sure. tell me if i need any special thing or if my suggestion works. (PLZ ANSWER)

If the unit is not plugged in when you are working inside it, just touch the metal of the frame before going inside. Touch the tip of any tool to the metal of the frame before touching it to anything inside the case.

NEVER work on the machine with power on unless you have a positive grounding method available for yourself and for the the machine.

You don't say whether you are a guy or a gal so I'll add one more thing. If you are wearing nylon panty hose and it is a dry day, take them off first. Nylon can generate a lot of static charge, enough to actually do some damage to the chips.

Touch any METAL part of the case with both your hands and hold them there for a few seconds to set your body's electrical potential to the same as the computer's, that way you won't fry anything inside. And yeah, do not do anything on the carpet. Your feet rubbing against it can build up a static charge that can be discharged through your hands into the PC (like walking to your car and shocking yourself when you go to open it).

EDIT

It's just habit and I forgot to mention it, but never work on your computer when it's powered on, plugged into a power outlet (even if it's off) and/or the PSU is still manually switched on (flip the switch on the back to 0 and wait about 10-15 seconds ). Even after all of this, BE CAREFUL around the PSU, even shut off and disconnected is still has enough stored power to kill people. Aka watch where you stick your tools.
