My daughters and I are learning online for free. it's not impossible, its quite easy.

and
http://www.violinonline.com/violinbasics.htm
Have both been really great websites. My girls are seven and eight, and can play most nursery rhyme songs and are learning some other tunes right now.
Passion for the instrument is more important than lessons. Good luck and HAVE FUN! If you get to the point that you get stuck, make friends with some music students and see if they can help. Music lessons are expensive, and around here, all the teachers are snobs.

Well, as a private violin teacher I can tell you that learning this instrument without a teacher is practically impossible. It is much harder than piano or guitar becasue you cannot see where the notes are. Unless you can read music and you have an amazing ear you really need to get a teacher. And even if you can read music, you have to know how to tune your violin correctly before you start.

The violin is almost impossible to learn without a good teacher. Can you even read music?

One thing you'll need is to keep your instrument tuned--you can do that at Online Violin Tuner. Best of luck!
