Iowa has its primary election for each candidate before any other state does. So if you want an early lead, you'll want to win the Iowa Primary, of course!

It is solely because of the behavior of the media. If you receive the most votes in the first contest (Iowa) or beat expectations, the media will declare you to be the "winner" and the front runner for the nomination of your party. Quickly the financial and political powers that be will coalesce around you because they want to make sure that they get on the winning side before it is too late. As the financial resources dry up for the other candidates they start to drop out and soon there are only 2 or sometimes three candidates left in the running.

The bottom line is that it is all psychologically important, not quantitatively. The number of delegates up for grabs in Iowa and New Hampshire is next to nothing and by themselves would have no practical effect on the selection of a party's nominee.

It really isn`t, the press is making a big deal about it, but they have very few electoral votes. The real test comes when states like California, New York, Pennsylvania, and Texas vote. The states with the large electoral votes are going to carry the election.

It's the start of the horse race. First ones out of the starting gate aren't guaranteed to win, but the ones that stumble and fall are the first ones to be sent to the glue factory.
