Sitting @ an intersection this morning I noticed at least 60-70 pidgeons sitting side by side on a hydro wire all facing the same way.
Later on in the afternoon, same intersection the same birds were sitting side by side only this time facing a different direction!
Is there a reason for this?

The birds fly together in a flock. They came in one direction and all decided to rest on the wire. That is why they all faced the same direction.

If two flocks come from opposite directions, you will find some birds face one direction and the others the opposite direction.

maybe they like the humming/vibrating or heat that is coming off of the wire.
I see this all the time and never even wondered about it. I just thought that the view was good from up there and they could keep an eye out for hawks or whatever.
and maybe that is the only place big enough that they could all meet for their meeting on where to poop next and on who

they sit down on telephone wires because of fact it makes a available perch. although they could not touch greater desirable than one cord at a time. In some western states the telephone employer has somewhat made in attempt to characteristic an further "hawk roost" on actual of thier poles so the birds don't get electrocuted. If I keep in mind, alot of Golden Eagles have been dying because of fact they could fly in to sit down down on the poles and thier wings could touch 2 wires and electrocute the poultry. so long because of fact the poultry purely sits on one cord it somewhat is okay, yet while it touches 2 wires it completes a circuit and the present runs during the poultry. same reason you are able to not touch an electric cord with your ft on the floor- you complete a circuit ;) -Neb

They usually sit facing the wind so they do not get blown off. They flock because it is safer, and they like to perch up high and out in the open so they can see all around them and spot predators more easily.

Those birds enjoy the vibrations going on in those wires.

You got me. I have noticed the same thing sometimes. I think they just like to gather. Perhaps it is the share time after feeding or something.
