I understand the math part. I would like to know how the vehicle computer dose it, how dose the vehicle know how much fuel I have added, dose it have a flow meter in conjuction with the odometer. Is the computer looking at real time (like the mpg at that instant) or is it a product of time? Just how accurate is it?

The computer doesn't know or care how much gas you put in the tank. It uses a flow meter and the input from the odometer to figure the MPG. Most are fairly accurate. You can check it by filling the tank, noting the mileage (or using the trip odometer if you have one) then figuring the MPG at your next fill up and see how close your figures and the computers are. However if you do that set the pump on auto and remove the nozzle when it kicks off. Don't top off or add any more fuel after the auto shut off.

well the pcm contorls every thing in your car and yes on the fuel pump assembly there a flow meter to see how much fuel .well is not a porduct of time, if your automobile have the mpg gage it is only acccurate is the car is on top runing condition. and if the manual said it you car will get about that much

well on most cars the computer dose care and know because that is it job is to control every thing that make your car run, well you can be say well i could bypass the computer to turn on your fuel pump, but you still need the computer to tell how much gas you need to keep your car running so the computer dose care and know
