Or is this just an old wives tale? I am not a big fan of this all natural stuff, but I am desperate and willing to try anything.

um, ok... Valerian is not where valium comes from.

Just to be clear and fair. Valerian has NOTHING to do with valium.

Valerian will, however, provide a mild sedative effect that might be used clinically to induce sleep. Other, more well tested, compounds are available to use as treatment. Go to your doctor and get scientifically accurate treatment.

Valerian has helped me in the past, so yes, it works. Other things you might like to try are glass of warm milk before bed (it's never done anything for me but some people swear by it), warm bath, burn lavender essential oil on a burner in your bedroom, try reading a really boring book ;-) Things to avoid: caffiene for 6 hours before you go to bed, sugary food/ drinks (chocolate included), sports/ aerobic exercise, action movies.

Hope this helps...

Valerian helped me when I was having trouble falling asleep due to stress/anxiety. I also used (Rescue Sleep) it is a natural sleep aid (spray) found in natural supplement stores. Good Luck!

Try taking some Melatonin shortly before bedtime. (Also a quiet, dark room, free of distractions... which I'm sure you've tried, along with avoiding stimulants at night such as caffeine).

The new sleep medicine Rozerem (ramelteon) works on melatonin receptors to make you "less awake" instead of "more tired" (plus its non habit forming, and has virtually no side effects) ...and so taking melatonin should have a similar effect. More free melatonin means more melatonin available to bind to melatonin receptors... which will make you... less awake.

Nature made supplements are good quality, cheap, and available virtually everywhere (I use their fish oil supplement), so I'll reccomend their melatonin.

Oh yes. Valerian is where Valium comes from. It will put you to sleep deeply.
