The goal of the hand is to get as many of the same kind as you can. Like a pair, three of a kind (like 3 kings, 3 eights, etc); or two pairs. If you can get all five cards to be the same suit, that's a flush.

You start out with five cards. You can toss away any from none to all, and get new cards to add up to five again. It's best to keep any pairs and/or high cards you already have, try to maximize your hand.

Once you have your hand, you basically have to convince the rest of the table you have an excellent hand, whether you do or not...that's the tricky part of the game. Finally when the betting's done you all show your cards and whoever has the highest scoring hand wins the pot.

It depends on the type of poker being played. Every player makes the ante (pot) they place a certain amount into it before every play. So 1 cracker or what be it. Except in black jack, where the players all make their own bets. In black jack, the dealer deals two cards to each player both face up. All the players play against the dealer, not each other. The dealer deals themself one face down, and one face up. If the face up card is an ace the dealer offers insurance against him having black jack (21, where face cards are 10 and aces are 11 unless they would make you go over 21 in which case they are 1) where you pay to a minimal amount, usually 1 credit, to keep your original bet if he does. You then try to get 21, if you go over you bust, which means you loose. A dealer must deal to themself until they have 16 and stop at 17, which means if they have 15 they can deal a 7 or greater and go bust. They deal to themself only after all other players are finished, going in clockwise order. A player can 'hit' or get an extra card, or 'stay' which means not drawing any more. If they begin a game with two of the same card they can 'split' which means that they make two hands and get a card to each, but they place the initial bet on the second hand too. So if you started with 8 and 8 you can split it so that you have two hands, 8 and 10 and 8 and 9, and if you bet had been 2 credits, then you'd place 2 credits on the second one too. This can only be done on the initial go. Same with doubling, which is where you stay on your first hand without hitting, and you double your bet. If you get blackjack (21) then you win automatically, unless the dealer also has blackjack in which case it's a 'push'. If you win you get your bet back double, of course. In a push you simply don't lose and you get your bet back.

In 5 and 7 card draw you get dealt that many cards face down. You then make a bet or 'fold' which is to place your cards face down in the discard pile and stay out of that round. After all bets and folds are made, going clockwise, you then get a chance to discard as many cards as you want and get dealt back up to the correct number. After this point depending on the variation you may bet/fold again. You then proceed to try to make the best 5 card hand you can. In 7 card stud you do not get to discard and draw. After you make the best 5 card hand you show it to the remaining players, but not the rest of your cards in the 7 card versions.

In texas hold'em the player to the left of the dealer makes a 'small blind' which is usually half of the 'big blind' which is payed by the player to the left of them. The dealer then deals two cards face down to each player, and they either bet or fold. After that the dealer plays three cards face up, and betting/folding goes, the dealer plays up to 2 more cards face up, with betting/folding between each one. After all five cards are face up you show your two cards, if anyone else has stayed that long. The person with the best 5 card hand (using the cards the dealer played faced up as part of the hand) wins. If anyone bets all their chips in one go and are matched then all players who match them turn their cards face up and all the cards are drawn to the 5 cards, then it's compared.

A full-boat beats a straight. Full boat being a pair and 3 of a kind....straight is 5 cards in consecutive order. Three of a kind beats a pair. And of course 4 of a kind beats everything unless someone else has it too but higher value.
