If it powers up run your antivirus and disk clean up and also defrag. Get hold of a copy of CCleaner (free) and transfer to your Dads machine and run regularly.

Just quit? That could mean anything. The fact that it is not connected to the internet has no bearing at all. If it powers up but nothing else happens, I'd say a virus. (coulda got it from some game or any item you loaded on it. If it won't even power up, Its 'fried' most likely a power supply. You could call the manufacturer's 800 number and talk to a techie. They might help you 'reboot (cold start) the system. Good luck

While it is possible to catch a virus without Internet access, the computer may have a hardware malfunction. When you say it has quit working, does it do anything at all, lights, fans, noises? You might want to talk to a repairman.

If the bios shows on the screen then nothing eles happens it is most likely the hard drive has failed.
Firstly open the box and check all connections are seated, nothing has moved, RAM, CPU, wiring, slave and master jumper etc.
if you agree that HDD is stuffed, remove the hard drive and if you install a new one, good chances are that the old one can be seen as a slave. You can try the old one as a slave on someone else computer.

What was you doing on it when it just stopped working??
And what came up on the screen??
What happened to the computer?? Did it crash, restart, turn off and come up with deleted or corrupt files??
We need to know the answers to these questions to help!
But you could try system restore to get back to the last know good configuration, then put anti-virus, and all the protection on there.

Well does it at least power on and go through the bios? If so, you can just reinstall an OS
