Hi All,

My friend and i have had some conflicting advise regarding water to an infant. I was told not to give water because it is already in the formula/breastmilk. I was told to dilute the formula a little meaning an extra 5mls if baby is a little constipated but only for that reason.

She was told to give water when it is hot, which i don't agree with and my maternal health nurse doesn't agree either. Water doesn't provide the nutrients.

What has everyone else been told?

I have been told both actually.
*At 3 months I NEVER gave my oldest water other than in formula. He was fine, but he was colicky.

*With my second child I DID give him water, but only about 2 ounces a day. However he drank a lot of formula and was always thirsty,so water was a good option for him.

Both my kids were fine and I tried both.

good luck! You do what you feel is best with your child because everyone has different opinions and only you are the mom.

good luck!

Water is not necessary before 6-12 months of age since they get all the hydration they need from breastmilk or formula.

In fact, water can be harmful, particularly to a newborn. Water can cause an electrolyte imbalance, seizures, brain damage at the worst, and at the best, it takes up valuable space inside baby's tummy essentially starving them of the nutrients they need in milk.

Depends on which generation you talk to. I gave my baby girl water at 1 week old, the hospital and doctors said it was fine. And the water had 1 teaspoon of Karo Lite Syrup and she drank this until she was weaned off the bottle. Water will not hurt them. She is 24 now and getting married next Saturday

WOW! Syrup? Crazy!
If you breastfeed, and want to keep breastfeeding, you should really be cautious about the additional liquids you introduce. They're not nearly as nutritious and beneficial as what your body naturally produces for your child.

With that said, several of my children have had gastric problems as a reaction to the food I ate while breastfeeding. While I prefer homeopathic medicine (like Hyland's) I have also given them diluted teas (fennel, peppermint) in a warmed bottle.

As for syrup, like honey for children under a year, stay away! It may cause botulism.

Mine was on Prevacid at 5 weeks. The medicine was Solutab, so I had to hold it inside her cheek til it melted, then give her plain water from a bottle to wash it down. I used a Preemie bottle (2oz, but only gave her a few sucks of water) and a Preemie nipple so it was really slow. she was fine. that was the only way to get the med into her.

If your baby is 3 months already I was told to give my son 1 tsp karo syrup with 1 oz of water. My doctor gave me the advice. It worked and he was fine.

Whats the reason to give water? If they are on formula - they get plenty. if they are on breastmilk they are geting the perfect nutrition. Water isnt necessary until 10 months or so

I gave boiled water to both my children, only when it was really hot, if they had been in and out of the car but only a little and not as part of their diet.
