This is my personal observation (being a part of the lesbian community myself), how come whenever you go to the gay/lesbian section in a movies rental store, you see most gay male films have them mostly nude showing off their bodies(and with the exception of the L-word, or a male directed porn, we don't see the "riquesness" of women so much). But especially on tv we're cast into these dialogue hungry, "coping with 'our problems' ", roles when there's more to some of us than that. Does a lot of it have to do with the one's acting contract 'do's and don'ts', censorship?

Jay, actually, I own most of the movies you're talking about. I'm not talking about you're powderpuff pg13 stuff. Im making a comparison to the drastic differences in sex portrayal/intimacies in lesbian film/tv vs. gay male, etc.

It has more to do with the culture's lack of comfort with lesbianism. Gay males actually are benefiting from decades of "nearly out" references that have given our current culture more time to get used to the idea of the gay male. The cultural coping mechanism is helped by the use of humor and insinuation prior to actually dealing with topics that have been taboo. So the covertness of lesbian society is still working against it. It has been much more common to discuss gay men than lesbian women for decades, so our culture is still waking up to the phenomenon. You are also talking about the entertainment genre, which could be very forward thinking, but still struggles to produce a strong female lead in any picture, let alone 50% of them, which our population would tend to indicate. So we are all raised with male themes and male leads. How many years to make realistic lesbian protrayal? I am guessing we are 30 years out, at least, so you might want to look at a career in film directing if you want to speed that up. How many lesbian women directors is the entertainment industry financing today? Who is taking that voice to the culture to move this boulder we call understanding and portrayal?

Quite the contrary, there are plenty of Gay films where the women are in very intimate situations:

Saving Face
Loving Annabelle
D.E.B.S. (yes even this movie)
The Hours (only first base though)
Imagine Me and You
Kissing Jessica Stein
Being John Malkovich

It's really the actress that has the choice on whether she is willing to play the part.

I think it's because the porn industry is a male dominated one. I've run across a few sites dedicated to lesbian porn for lesbians, but haven't evaluated it (LOL, not that I would be a good judge!)

Good luck!

Because the movies that have all the girl on girl action are in the straight men's section.
