I know that sometimes, a tuned, free-flowing exhaust can sound powerful and can help performance, but they are engineered by professionals and are compatible with the vehicle's engine, computerized calibration, and meet all city, county, and state regulations. But these buzz-saws that are cruizing around town sound ridiculous and don't do anything useful whatsoever, and just make me want to throw a brick thru the windshield. Why do people do this?

they are there to give the police something to do. and provide amusement to people like me i like to see a car making a huge racket and not really going any faster it gives me a chuckle to know that they actually paid money to make it sound like that. same goes for big trucks with dual exhaust even better if its a diesel and has dual smoke stacks behind the cab i teer up a bit when i see one of those especially if it is belching black smoke. Harleys are particularly annoying in my view. i saw an ad for one once pro porting a new heavier crankshaft. what some people will do to have others look at them i dont get it i like to go unnoticed myself.

Well, remember back in the 80's we used to have the "Puerto Rican" mobiles? The cars with them tires sticking out 5 inches outside the wheel wells? The hydraulic lifts etc?? Same idea. Since the demise of the Great American Muscle Cars, ie: Dodge Charger R/T, Ford Mustang Shelby 500 KR, Chevy Malibu SS, etc etc etc...the new generation can't find the old muscle cars in a decent enough shape that they can fix up and run on their meager pocket money or drug money depending on the youth, so they get the Japanese cars ie: Toyota,Honda,Mitsubishi etc and try to make em look cool by putting body kits on them (makes em heavy but who cares), neon paint so they can be seen miles away, a huge Lamborghini style rear wing on the back that doesn't serve any real purpose, and lets face it today's 4bangers and 6 bangers might have off the line power due to gearing etc, they bottom out on top end compared to a fully bored and tuned 440cid engine. So hence the loud exhausts to make themselves sound bigger/faster than they really are.

Along with the Boom Boom stereos they insure that the owner and his passengers suffer irreparable hearing damage in a very short period of time. When they can't sleep at night because they have a constant ringing in their ears (tinnitis) they'll wish they had never seen the things.

Exactly that... They're loud, buzzy and obnoxious. The only purpose they serve is to attract attention.

They are called fart cans and they call attention to those who feel ignored. Fart cans go well with 48" subs. Boom boom boom!
