I don't know - I don't watch him - I know alot of people like him. Maybe he's just an idiot that happens to be black?

No one questions Bryant Gumbel's intelligence and abilities. He was excellent for NBC Sports in the 70's, and helped the Today Show become dominant in its time slot ... which still holds true today. He's also great as the host of HBO's Real Sports.

Is he a great play-by-play guy? Probably not. Of course, he does it only six times a year or so.

There was a fascinating article on Gumbel in Sports Illustrated several years ago. Might be worth a read if you really want to understand one of the most fascinating characters in television.
