Show them this parent's guide to social networking sites, it's really good: http://yuniti.com/parents_guide.php

Tells all the benifits of having a myspace or other site, and how they can be safe.

Well, personally I think 13 is a tad too young, but maybe times are changing. I was about 11 or 12 when I was even allowed msn. Anyhoodles, If talking with your mum hasn't worked, then maybe try showing her myspace and your friends pages and such. You could ask her at first whether you can make one, and only go on it for a few minutes each day or something, to get used to the idea. You mightn't even like myspace. (I don't- I hate the bloody thing. Gives me lag). Well, that may be unlikely, but maybe try getting your friends into facebook if your mum likes that idea better- facebook i think has much more privacy and is more secure than myspace, in my opinion.

What most of my students seem to do is give their parents periodic access to their myspace account for viewing. We did a unit on internet safety and all but one student's parents viewed their account.

Once they saw who their son/daughter had in their "friends" list and what they were writing, the parents seemed ok with it.

I think the concern from a parent's standpoint is that there are people out there who look at sites like MySpace as cyber hunting grounds and often younger people may not pick up on the innuendos and "tricks" that a harmful person may use to gain another person's trust. The people who mean to do you harm are probably few and far between, but they're experts at fooling people into believing them.

Just let your parents view your page.

When I first asked my parents to make a profile, they weren't for it because right off the bat they thought old guys trying to stalk little girls. After a little asking, they said yes, but only if they had my login so they could check.

Just explain that you can have your profile private, so not everyone can see it and you have the feature so people must know your last name or e-mail address to add you. Good luck.

Let them monitor it until they understand what it is that you are enjoying on it. Also never hide anything on it. Since you didn't give your age, I really can't endorse unsupervised myspace. Let them set limits on how long you can be on it and who can respond to it. Have fun.

tell them to monitor your myspace and let them see how it works and after a few weeks they will see for themselves. you can set your account to where all comments have to be approved by you and also set your profile page to only your friends that you have accepted can see your page.

tell them that you can make your profile private, and people have to send u friend requests, so its a sure way that only your friends can see your profile. i have one and its safe. the only way you cant be safe is if you talk to people you dont know. let them look at it themselves. they'll see.
