You don't have to pay for the internet. But you do have to have a wireless router. Unless you go to some coffee shops where there is hot spots then you can browse the internet for free. I know Starbucks and McDonalds have Wi Fi capibilities.

The Ipod touch requires that you are in a hotspot location that offers Wi-Fi internet. Hotspot locations are areas that offer wireless internet like coffee shops, airports, hotels, restaurants. Some of these places charge you by the hour, or by day usage to use Wireless Internet.

However there is a directory of locations that offer free Wi-Fi internet and there is no charge what so ever. Here is a link of places. It is organized state and city.

You can go on the internet using ipod touch at home if you have a Wi-Fi computer network setup by using your router and internet if you have it already in your home.
