Everyone knows the answer to this question, as everyone has at one time or another been treated with unfair disdain or disrespect at the hands of another. Worse still are the countless people that have suffered physical or mental abuse. And worst of all those that have paid with their lives. So what human dignity is, is that thing that is stolen when you suffer at the hands of another, or at the hands of fate through no fault of your own.

I adhere to Nietzsche's idea of dignity, as expressed in his early essay The Greek State:

"[E]very human being, with his total activity, only has dignity in so far as he is a tool of the genius, consciously or unconsciously; from this we may immediately deduce the ethical conclusion, that "man in himself," the absolute man, possesses neither dignity, nor rights, nor duties; only as a wholly determined being serving unconscious purposes can man excuse his existence."

A person retains their dignity when they are able to maintain their quality in their person-hood, in whatever way they may understand it. Any precedent change in that condition or quality in their self perception to the negative is a loss of dignity.

I feel it all comes down to respect. For oneself. For others. For life in general. If you choose to live this way you walk the path of life with dignity.

There is no objective human dignity. It exists only in the mind. It is not inherent to the object. It is inherent in the perception process of the human mind.

I would love to say:"my avatar", but this question is not for levity. Such a question does seem to exceed the limits of a Y/A forum, yet it does deserve some answer.
Humans, by their very existence, are examples of near-miraculous creation--the only way to improve upon it is lifestyle: how one perceives and conducts them self. Honesty, education, faith. INTEGRITY. To do less cheapens the gift. 'Do life right, or don't do it at all' is my maxim. End of sermon.

FROM DEFINE.COM:

DIGNITY: "The state of being worthy or honorable; elevation of mind or character; true worth; excellence. "

"the quality of being worthy of esteem or respect"

Its the quality of having /seeing worth in yourself or others, or by the top definition others seeing worth in you...
Basically, in life it translates to having self respect and esteem and deserving what you want.
