There is no helmet law in Florida. That's part of the reason my cousin lives there. In ways I understand it as I'm from Indiana that doesn't have a helmet law either.

For me it depends on the type of roads I'm on and how I'll be riding. When I'm in Indiana, I typically don't wear a helmet but that's because there's very little traffic in the areas I ride that I have to worry about it. But then if I'm going to get agressive, the protection goes on. Here in San Francisco bay area I live now. You better believe I'm wearing as much gear as I can. Nothing less than helmet, gloves, boots and body armor jacket. Longer rides even get body armor pants.

Personally, I don't believe there should be a helmet law anywhere much like I don't think there should be seatbelt laws. I don't believe the government should take away someone's right to decide if they live or die. Either rate, it's not necessarily nuts, but also not a good idea lol

The classic "ain't gonna happen to me" syndrome; about all you can do is hope they stay lucky. Saw a heartbreaking segement on "Cops" the other night: a patrol car pulled over a young lad for riding dangerously...the officer got out of the car, approached the young biker, greeting him courteously....all the while, the windshield camera was running...they were parked under a street light and you could see, clearly, the relative youth of the biker....and no helmet! Then, for some reason, he decided to run, and pulled away on his bike.....high speed down a main thoroughfare, thru red lights...until a pickup pulled out of a sidestreet and the young biker ran smack into his left front fender.....the camera got a close up of him lying crumpled in the street.....while one of the officers tried, without luck, to find a pulse...the young man was dead.......alive, one second, dead the next......and all I could think about was him sitting on his bike 30 seconds ago, looking at the officer......so sad!! Youth finds it hard to think of something like that, however, and that's the problem.....maybe they should be made to see some videos like this one as part of the motorcycle safety courses (which, if they are not mandatory; SHOULD be)

Personally, as an avid pationate sportbiker, I do support helmet laws. I live in Florida and it's not uncommon to read the newspaper and see news of biker deaths not involving helmets. Can anyone truely believe that wearing a helmet doesn't help in any way to lessen the blow to the head? They'd be lying. As far as the whole feeling of freedom when they're riding without a helmet fastened on, I think that's a crap excuse for their depression of old age and needing to "live on the edge" to make up for it, or it's someone who's just trying to impress others, hence look tougher than thou to other guys or just trying to look suave to the ladies to try to get laid. Feeling of freedom? That's crap! Let me tell you, having sand/dirt hit your face sucks! Having bugs hit your face sucks! Rain drops hitting your face sucks! Having the air dry out your eyes sucks!

There is an exception to the "no helmet" law in Florida though. I don't know the exact details, but I believe that you have to be licensed first, be either 18 or 21 (not sure), and have a minimum of $10,000 (or maybe more) insurance coverage. I don't know the exacts and I could personally care less, because i'm not stupid enough to ride without a helmet. I have a few times, but only on the infield section of the Road Atlanta track (It's private land so you can ride without a helmet) where you can't even go faster than 5 miles an hour. You'll just never see me ride without a helmet outside of the Road Atlanta infield.

To answer the question, they're not nuts, they're future statistical idiots. Remember, either old guys going through some mid life crisis or a young guy just trying to look hip, tough, macho, whatever, but basically it's just for appeal.

As far as listening to music in your helmet....that's pretty much stupid too. Music or cell phone calls are just a distraction and it takes more concentration to ride than to drive.

My 2 cents.

Helmets are not required in Florida. Its one of the few states that it is not mandatory. Its freedom of choice to the rider.

True bikers who ride for the enjoyment of riding, always gear up - not just helmets - full gear - gloves, helmet, jacket, boots, pants. Helmets protect your brain, but what about the 3rd degree burns from being drug 150 feet down hot florida highway at 60 miles per hour? Jackets/pants/gloves :-)

Those you see with no gear are posers wannabe's. Also known as "organ donors", "pavement jockies" or "squid's".

ATGATT (all the gear, all the time)

The law in Florida is that you do not need to wear a helmet, but have to carry extra insurance if you chose to ride without one. I always feel a lot safer riding with safety gear from head to toe.

venkatraman and foxbat are precisely incorrect i do no longer know what minootoo is attempting to declare. Stretch is authentic. right that's my answer from final time I observed this question phrased as "what's BHP?" A lie A random form between the gross horsepower and the actual brake horsepower BHP is the horsepower on the wheel, in spite of each and every little thing upload-ons and driveline losses. Gross HP is what venkatraman replaced into speaking approximately. lower back interior the Muscle motor vehicle days the manufacturers quoted gross, till the numbers have been given so huge that the assurance firms began freaking out, then they could only make some thing up. Then interior the 70s they began utilising SAE internet, which risk-free upload-ons alongside with water and oil pump, yet no longer driveline losses. for a protracted time Porsche replaced into the only employer that certainly quoted authentic BHP (for this reason the 205 BHP 911 replaced into appreciably swifter than the 225 ?hp mustang), yet even they have wandered truly. Now motor vehicle manufacturers and advertorials, er I recommend motor vehicle magazines, all say BHP in spite of if that's no longer. working example, the 290"bhp" NSX is unquestionably putting down approximately 220 HP on the wheel. the quantity that the producer lies varies by utilising Asianess of the automobile. Hammer is carefully incorrect to boot. human beings arise with the strangest derivations of the observe "brake" in this context. It potential "brake" as interior the "brakes" on the automobile. that's how lots braking power it take to give up thepersistent wheels. BHP is the flexibility on the wheels in spite of each and every little thing upload-ons and driveline losses. end of tale. era. Jeez. do no longer answer in case you do no longer know. in case you go with the two factors only say "hi" or some thing, do no longer make up a gaggle of bvllshit. observing the sundown and smarty pants, you're the two incorrect and that's incorrect in wiki. And it does not have something to do with 'how long it takes to sluggish the automobile down" study to study you moron. You idiots are speaking approximately SAE Gross. look it up, someplace different than wiki.

Believe it or not, some people are actually against helmet laws... and for legitimate reasons, namely, in certain accidents a helmet can actually cause you to break your neck! For more info, just google "helmet law" and "broken neck."

Me? I rather take my chances with a helmet on... there's just something about the image of a watermelon smashing on the ground that disturbs me.

It's a personal choice. A risk that free adults choose to take. Like riding a bike at all.

I wear a helmet all the time, but it is their choice to do so.

I believe helmets are helpful

I do not believe there should be a law, let Darwin's laws sort that one out.

There is evidence for and against, so let them choose.

Some people feel more "free" without a helmet....why they put "the feel of the wind" through their hair, before safety is beyond me....besides, I think helmets look fashionable as well as safe
