I feel that the school did not handle this at all and allowed a culture of suspicion and doubt fester. And who could blame the black kids from feeling put upon

I think the whole situation was mishandled by all parties involved, especially school officials and the courts. The school did nothing to address the racism on its grounds and allowed it to get out of control. Certainly, the "Jena 6" did overreact by attacking the white kid as revenge for past incidents involving hanging nooses and alleged attacks by white kids against blacks on private property. No one ever said they shouldn't have been punished for their behavior. However, this does not warrant slapping attempted murder charges on one of the kids simply because the beating inflicted on the white kid looked worse than what it really was. It was the double-standard applied in doling out punishment that is what caused the mass protests.

The Jena 6 story wasn't correctly portrayed in the media. First and foremost, it's NEVER acceptable for six to gang up on one individual. Justin Barker, the white guy that was beaten, had nothing to do with the noose incident or any of the other incidents that was reported. Mychal Bell one of the guys that beat Justin Barker is a four time repeat violent offender who was on probation at the time of the attack. I understand there may be racial tension, but violence is NEVER the answer and will never solve anything. It only sets us back. 2D
