Invasion of the American embassy in Tehran and the way the Carter Administration botched it all. The Canadians turned out to be the good guys and Ross Perot was the knight on a white horse...while Carter "contemplated the situation from the Rose Garden". It was the lowest spot in American history in my lifetime.

Depends on your perspective and who wrote the history, seeing that history is usually written by the winners it is unlikely to be controversial.
In current events I think the Vietnam and Iraq conflicts are controversial, more so the way returned soldiers have been treated from both conflicts.
The open support of Hitlers rise to power by British and American business men ( Henry Ford for instance)
Forget the holocaust , it isnt contoversial,it happened and there is no argument there!
Eighteenth century- the Industrial revolution and the use of child labour in England.
The rise of the Spanish inqisition in the middle ages.
The treatment of Christians by Moslems and Vice versa during the crusades, for much of the time that Europe was in the dark ages the moslems of the Holy land were artists , mathematicians, scientists , doctors and medical practitioners. Most of the maths we use today including our numbering system is Moslem based. ( Al-gorithm, Al-gebra)
Again your perspective on an event will decide if it is controversial.
good luck with your assignment !

I live in Knoxville Tennessee, a city that was almost equally divided in half during the civil war with secessionists and abolitionists. Brother against brother, neighbor against neighber and all that jazz. Knoxville went confederate, but the 49% abolitionists left in the city were royally screwed. My city was by far not the only one in America to deal with this problem. In a nutshell, I'd do the secession of the southern states to form their own country, and the Northern decision to stay independent, and how this affected the population. You'll find a lot of info on it easily, as it is probably the most written about controversy in U.S. history.
Besides the war with Iraq. but that's not past yet. Let me know if that doesn't interest you, and i'll try another.

There are a lot of different things you can do such as the United States decision to enter Vietnam starting the Vietnam War. Another good one might be the whole Watergate scandal. Something else that seems to be very controversial is abortion, so you could focus on Roe v. Wade. Um lets think.. oh there is also the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki that would be interesting to write about! Good luck :)

A few thoughts:
Whether or not the South should have seceded from the USA to start the Civil War.
Why was there an AMERICAN Civil War (just want to save you all having to point out that there have been others in the course of history).
Was the Treaty of Versailles (particularly the French demands for revenge) necessary.
Did it, in fact, lead directly to World War II.
Was the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki necessary.
There is NO controversy involving the Holocaust. It happened. It is fact and a waste of air to discuss it.
I won't provide you with the answers. That's what this question is all about!

An argumentative essay would be : if USA should have dropped two atom bombs over Japan the 6th and 9th of august 1945.
Today there are millions of people who believe the USA should have invaded japan´s soil risking the lives of hundred of thousands of american soldiers, but protecting Japanese lives by not dropping the bomb.

Lots of good answers to this question.
The Dardanelles of World War 1. Was this a good operation to help hasten the end of the war, or a foolhardy expedition with no chance of success?
