I do understand what you are saying, and I agree, it is a national obsession. I personally adopt the Fraze "you cant take it with you" I personally place value on family and relationships. The only things I need to be happy are my husband, kids and extended family, maybe a bar-b-que here and there (lol). But stuff is just stuff. Some of it is necessary but most of it isn't. You need toothpaste, you don't need a $5000 purse. Catch my drift?

I wouldn't say "obsessed" but financial security is VERY important to me. This includes having money and material things available...typical Taurus, lol.
As for the national obsession-we live in a disposable culture. Its not that we have a lot of money, its that we don't buy things we intent to keep so the attitude towards things is very different than it was in my parents and grand parents times.

I agree with the first answerer, that it is a sickness or obsession. But more and more, people are defining themselves by having the newest cell phone, the trendiest clothes, the hottest gadgets, etc. Whatever used to keep that in check in the past has dissappeared. I don't know if its morals or values or what, but it is definitely getting worse.

Materialistic people disgust me. It's so sad that it's getting to be a national obsession. I refuse to buy expensive brand name stuff. They're usually not practical and not that good looking either. They're just a rip off! Also, it seems like people want to get the latest stuff to show it off. Makes me sick!

I live an ascetic life. Raising children, I struggled with money and wanting stuff for them. But, I never really wanted stuff for myself. After my children were grown, I moved to a very simple life high in the mountains and gave up on money. All of a sudden, though, I got rich. Now I have money and it doesn't matter to me. So, I let others take care of it and I take care of them and I spend all day in a canoe with the ducks. Materialism is a disease of the human spirit.

No, i'm purely interested in achieving a comfortable time-honored of residing. yet, I certainly have not got any activity in status symbols or opulence. I somewhat have seen that many that've severe wealth, use that as a manner of feeling stronger to those people who have not got as plenty. maybe they doubt or don't think interior the innate worth of all of God's infants of each and every species, including ours, and that they experience they decide on super wealth to lead them to experience stronger. maybe, they are actually not waiting to experience stronger to others, they think of that makes them valueless. *sm*

Oh, your talking about the "love" of money. It's sad because many of these people are not happy, or are insecure about other things. I know very wealthy people who you would never know have money because they have their priorities right, and people who don't have much that obsess. I avoid people like this because they are self-absorbed.

I am fairly concerned with it, yes---because even if you are aware you cant have everything, having something that is valuable and to be envied somehow makes you able to ignore everything you envy about other people.
...If that makes sense, :)
Not that I go overboard or anything.

i can tell you that i have a huge issue with shoes. i am not, by nature, a materialist. but i cannot resit shoes.
i think it more of an obsession/sickness, not a desire to own more, show more, be more.
i just have this freaksih addiction to shoes.
