Joshua was the Israelite leader who came after Moses. The Israelites were on their way to Caanan, the land promised to them from God. They had to fight against the inhabitants of the land in order to win the land. God wanted the Caananites to be expelled from the land. Jerico was a fortified city which had a wall around it. It order to confront the inhabitants the Israelites had to overcome the existing fortifications and yes the wall had to come down. The bringing down of the wall by God was a miracle.

Because Joshua was leading the Israelites in a genocidal war against the inhabitants of Canaan. Since Jericho was a powerful and fortified city, it was a military imperative that the walls come tumbling down so that the people of Jericho could be destroyed. Had this not have happened, the army of Jericho would have almost certainly wiped out the Israelites. Then the history of the Middle East, the Bible, and the world probably would have been quite different.

Jericho was the first kingdom that the Israelites came to when they crossed the Jordan. God had promised the land to them, but since there were already kingdoms there, who would have fought to keep what they had, the Israelites had to destroy the kingdoms in order to own them.
Did it have to be that way? Who, now, can say. The walls tumbling down was a sign of the great power of the Israelites God, one that would need to be feared by the other kingdoms for Israel to become the land that was promised. I guess, under those circumstances, yes, it did have to come tumbling down. I read it, also, as a test for the people....seven days of grueling marching in the same place? Seems like a test to me.

Wall had to come down to get in the town and eliminate enemy. Aidon402 - 7 days marching in step would set up a vibration that could affect a already weakened wall in a earthquake prone area to finally collapse.

No, he didn't. It's a myth. Archaeology shows jericho was abandoned at the time.
