whenever i take off slow my transmission shifts hard and confused. it goes from second to first and back to second. once i'm over 40-50 MPH it shifts perfectly. when i idle, it idles at 3-4 hundred RPMs or 9-12 hundred back and forth. when i accelerate hard it shifts almost perfect. could it be a sensor in my transmission or some sort of throttle sensor?

Sounds like two problems. Firstly, I would check your idle air control valve and PCV. Dirt or leaks here would cause the engine to be confused, and consequently confuse the signals sent to the trans. You aren't revealing the age or mileage of the car, this matters. Check for trouble codes, clean out all operating engine sensors, especially the throttle body. if the engine isn't operating properly, the trans won't either. Lastly, change the trans filter and fluid. When you do this, spray the transmission valve body down with Brake Clean to remove possible contaminants. You may have to change the fluid 2-3 times to purify the system. Remember that unless your torque converter has a drain plug on it, it contains at least a couple of quarts of older contaminated fluid. Good Luck!!! E-mail me with the results, if you like.
