Sure, you grow up with the language because that is your envrionment, but is it something you grow into as well? It's not like you can change the name of an object...like to call a pillow a "bed' or vise versa because no one will know what you are talking about. Another example: Bush made an attempt at called French Fries "Freedom Fries" after the French refused to get involved with his Iraqi war, but I have not ever heard the term in use unless it was to make fun of the attempt.

Try looking very closely at an object and repeating the name of the object as you look at it. Do this for a while and the name will lose -not gain as you might expect- connection with the object.

It is also a matter of the particular person. Some people think in words others do not -it is all in their head they know what they mean- The latter would not grow into a language as the first would.

Language affects the way that people think, the way they see life.
As to "french fries", the French had nothing to do with them. French fries were "invented" by an American Indian who was working as a chef.

The very young mind absorbs knowledge at a rate that makes grown-ups envious. The first language a child learns is undoubtedly going to be the language they're best at. The ability to learn anything tapers off a bit, and grown-ups trying to learn a new subject wish they were as sharp as a child. I did, however, meet a man who was born and raised in Germany, but moved to the United States in his mid-teens. Now he's in his forties and claims he cannot speak German. Exposed to German speaking people, I suspect, would bring it all back. Grown-ups may take longer to learn new things, but given enough exposure, they can.
