Today, I found that the wrapped loaf of white bread in our pantry was mauled. About half of it was missing, and presumably eaten by something. Closer inspection revealed a 1.5" hole in the plastic bag on the bread (GROSS). Is this a mouse? Roaches? I haven't found any pests or droppings of any kind in my house, and we don't have pets. The bread was stored off the floor on a shelf in our pantry. No other food appears to have been similarly affected. I am so grossed out and want to prevent this from happening again.

Sounds like a rodent mouse or even a rat.

Definitely sounds like a mouse (or mouse community). I would personally set out some mouse poison which should take care of it within a few days (be sure to put some under the sink). My friend would call a professional exterminator--they'll locate where the mice got in and plug the holes for you.

A rat or mouse! I went today and bought some thing you plug into the electrical outlet sends out sound waves we cannot hear and gets rid of all pest and mice. I bought a home kit it had 5 of them in there and it is enough for my whole house including garage. My friend did this she does not even have spiders or crickets or anything now. Good Luck! I'm guessing you have a Habitrail? These cages are positively horrible, as they don't supply enough space. I'd get a decent sized wire cage. Also, he is most probably bored so take him out at 7-10pm every night. Take him out in the hamster ball and keep him running in there for a max. of 15 minutes. Give him a bit of veg, such as cucumber. Keep him busy! Get him a hamster wheel if he doesn't already. Hamster wheels are excellent. Also, check his teeth. They might be a bit long, so consider taking him to the vets to get them cut, if they're long. Good luck! x

The description given implies that a large rodent , squirrel or a raccoon ! If you live in an area where construction is occurring it may have displaced any of the creatures listed above ; you may require the professional services of an exterminator - although the size inferred by your description is somewhat alarming .
Good luck !

I have not been able to catch whatever is in my house. I'll try the peanut butter. this rodent, whatever it is, has taken 2 bars of soap from my bathroom sink and took 1 box of D Con rat poison, no signs of where it took it & gnawed thru a plastic container that contained chemicals for the septic tank & took all the chemicals . WHAT DO I DO ???

Could be a squirrel, or a rat, maybe a raccoon. I'm leaning more towards the squirrel. Raccoon would pull the whole loaf off off of the shelve.

I can understand how a rodent can chew a 1.5" hole in the
bag, but after it ate a "half loaf of bread," How did it get "out"
the 1.5" hole? Unless it made several trips. Set up your video
camera, and catch it on film. <}:-})

Sounds like a rat!

Get a trap and put it right next to the bread with some peanut butter on it and this is what you should find...
