Once I was in France and I got sick. I went to the doctor and only had to wait for 5 minutes before I could see him (with no appointment made). I figured I would have to pay a lot of money because my insurance doesn't cover me outside the US, but it turned out to be only 20 euros. He gave me a prescription for some antibiotics, and I was worried about paying a lot for those as well, but they were only 10 euros. Keep in mind that this was without being having a French health card, which would have made things even cheaper.

When I go to the doctor in the US it's normally at least $150 before insurance, and more if I have to get any blood tests or anything.

Of course, their taxes are so high and that's what pays for everything. But I can't say it's not nice to go to the doctor and not have to worry about spending your savings on getting healthy. I can't say if it's better to live there or here or in the UK, only that there are differences. I wouldn't decide where to live solely on the health care, unless you have some type of seriously expensive chronic disease.

Sarah; Search my answers for "Socialized Medicine". Some of them are long but to trim it down here's the deal.

Some people in England have been waiting for years for heart surgery. Those that haven't died.

Canadians are mandated to be enrolled, it is illegal to have private insurance in Canada. There is a group that has it, illegally and they are the largest group of law breakers in Canada. They are medical professionals.

Canadians who can afford it will routinely come to the US for health care because in Canada the average wait to see a specialist is 18 weeks the last I heard.

The Governments of the world can't take care of small stuff, do you want to trust them with your health coverage.

BTW if you want see some real expensive health care, wait until it's free. Check the tax rates in some of these places with socialized medicine. It will scare you to death.

One last thought, every member of my family over 65 would be dead under NHS in England. They have all had heart surgery and all within days, not years, of seeing their primary physician.

The NHS like other areas has been subject to much damaging interference by the politicians. However everytime I have needed medical attention I have always had the best service here which is more than can be said for times in other countries

No that is not true, the NHS has always looked after myself first class, as for your other question, there are at the present time over 100,000 migrants coming into Great Britain every year.

I cant speak for Europe but we in the States take a great deal of pride in the National Honor Society. I was given the honor of joining in my Senior Year of High School and it is one of my most treasured memories.

No it depends which hospital you go to and which area you live in....for example Lewisham Hospital is Crap because its dirty ON the other hand Guys Hospital is clean and big....It is much better than the U.S you do not have to pay for anything if you are sick I think you get free antibiotics....everything is free not unless you want private health care....also we do not have to pay for Braces you can get them free on the NHS

Well, while it is the punchline of many jokes, we wouldn't want to be without it.

I understand it takes a lot longer to get test results etc back, but overall its a good service, as much as you can expect from a goverment run organization.

Ethnocentrism is a love of your own race, culture, country, etc. Most people have it and a little prejudism thinking their's is better than other's. I would love to see socialized medicine here. We are murdering our own people by not providing proper medicine or care. It's a shame.
