Ask the landlord to have it steam cleaned. They should have taken care of that before you moved in.

I dont see it happening smoke is the hardest thing to get out and when the weather changes it gets damp outside the carpet will really kick it up a notch and smell. Best bet is to take it up and paint the concrete and put a big area rug in! Have landlord replace carpet they usually can do this very cheap they have contractors that do all the units and they usually get a good deal! I think in Texas they have to replace the carpet on a new lease read your state rental laws landlords are responsible for paint and carpet and general upkeep!

Talk to the landlord and ask if they would provide the carpet cleaning on their own dime from a professional company. If not, you can do that yourself. Like someone else said, wash everything from top to bottom.

You might try calling a local janitorial supply store and see if they have a carpet cleaner that will get rid of the smoke smell. They have products for hospitals schools etc that will get rid of bad odors.

are you sure the smell is in the carpet and not from the walls or drapery? i would suggest washing everything from top to bottom and then try steam cleaning the carpet. if they were heavy smokers you might need to do it a few times.
