The reason most attorneys won't sue a police dept isn't fear, it's the odds of winning. Police officers are protected by law of being sued in circuit court, and any case against them must be taken to a federal court for violation of civil rights. It's long, costly, and most of the time you don't win (not always, but usually.) So attorneys look at that scenario and will do one of two things... turn it down, OR ask for a large retainer up front so they are paid for the next two or three years while it winds it's way through the federal courts. And by large I mean $20,000+.

If you have that kind of dough to hand over knowing you'll never see it again, then I'd say that right up front to a couple of attorneys and it will at least get them to take a look at your case facts and see if you have a snowball's chance in hell.

If your case is in New Jersey then it has to be a New Jersey licensed lawyer.

NO personal injury lawyer is going to be "scared to sue a public entity". Public entities such as police departments have deep pockets and are, therefore, VERY popular targets of lawsuits.

"whatever" is wrong bout the suit needing to be in Federal court. There are many lawsuits against police departments in State Courts. The only ones that tend to make the press, though, are the big civil rights cases that do end up in Federal court.

She's right about the odds being bad though.... I'd bet that more than 90% of the people who "think" they have grounds for a succesful suit really don't.

New Jersey isn't cheap to are living in, however it is not the maximum both. Housing rate is maximum with the shortest trip(Unless you do not brain lesser places). There are just a few towns/cities that I could advise you steer clear of. For probably the most aspect New Jersey does not have a prime crime price. NJ Transit's coach & bus provider can get you into town from such a lot materials of the state lovely handy. Commutes could variety from ninety-quarter-hour relying on discipline. You're sensible to not wish to force into the NYC, the usual Hudson River crossings are dangerous on well days. If you are operating within the town, you must be making first rate cash. Look into Bergen, or Union county for semi-cheap housing. At least the electrical energy is extra liable in Jersey.
