DO I!!! Oh yes!!

Was just speaking of this subject today when reuniting with an old friend from the 50's.

I so miss those days of innocence and a society that yes, had rigid rules, but everyone knew how and when to act, what was acceptable and what wasn't, and most tried to live by the golden rule. Values and principles were held paramount as a note of your character.

Times they have changed....no doubt.

HOWEVER, I kept those safer and gentler places benchmarks in MY HOME when raising my children, despite the 'outside' changes...and they now do it with their children.

What goes around CAN come around :-)

GREAT question!

Yes I most certainly do. It was a time when NO one locked their doors at night or even if they went on vacation. A time when you could walk the streets of major cities at 2 AM or any other time with no fear of guns, robbery, or whatever. No one carried so much as a knife, if there was a serious problem it could be settled with words or fists and then both sat down and shared a soda. STD's had not been invented or heard of yet, Police were actually your friends. Of course there was no computers, no cell phones, color tv was for rich people, you survived with 3 tv stations that signed off at 10 PM week nights, 1 AM on Sat ONLY. Everyone spent every spare moment outdoors playing, visiting and without an mp3 player plugged into their ears, a lucky child had a transistor radio, although you could only receive 3 - 5 FM stations but late at night you could pick up the signals from exotic places like Detroit or New York. On Saturday you all went to the Matinee, it cost 25 cents but you got cartoons, and sometimes a double feature. You worked hard for 25 cents a week allowance, but it went a long way. So yes, to me they were gentler and safer, but als, the world has moved on and this is what we have to deal with now, what scares me the most is that it will only get worse and new generations will believe that what I have just said is nothing more than a Fairy tale. How SAD that it can never be experienced again.

I would have to say during the 1950s. The war was over. People were battle weary and most just wanted to come back and start families. I was born in 1947. I remember summers when my parents left the front and back doors open to get cool air through out the house and none of us ever gave a thought to intruders. School was safe and so was TV. I remember watching shows like: I Love Lucy, Sherlock Holmes, Milton Berle, Red Skelton. Yes, the world, at least the one I lived in was a safer and gentler place.

Yes I do - and I was 6 years old and my teacher told me the worst thing in the whole wide world! The King had died!
Sad. Oh! to go back again. Seriously guys, the question is "Do you remember when the world was a SAFER and GENTLER place . . . . ." etc. The world has never been safe nor has it been gentle! CJ

I agree with those who say that the dangers existed and people were more ignorant and ill-informed. I also agree with many of the people who did experience a simpler, safer world. From looking at all the answers, it seems to have to do more with where you grew up than when you grew up. No wonder families are leaving the cities and large towns as soon as they can afford to.

I also think we live in a culture of fear because of how over-loaded we are by the media. It's good we are informed of what's going on in the world, but it bothers me to see how bound up in worry so many people are, and what it does to their children.

The fifties I suppose. Trouble with wearing rose tinted spectacles is forgetting that in those, safer and gentler times people died of ailments that can easily be sorted in this day and age.

Most people will remember their childhood as a safe time, if they had good parents they would have made it as safe as they could have for their children.I can remember when we could go off for miles on our bikes and play out till dark and no-one worried as long as you were home for tea.We could eat and drink what we wanted without having to think about what was in it or how it was grown. People looked out for each other and you knew if something was wrong you could go to nearly anyone in the community for help. One of the best questions I have seen so far, with some good answers.

I remember when we, as a people, were far more gullible, ignorant, uninformed, and ill educated.

A safer, gentler time. NO. It was only a mirage of ignorance. We were kids, of course life was simpler. Or we were young adults who hadn't lived a whole lot of life yet.

I just think that the things that were occurring weren't too publicly spoken of, put in the newspapers, broadcast on worldwide news, or openly openly discussed and brought to legislative change arenas such as local, state and federal governments entities.
Just because we didn't understand human nature and weren't wise enough to be wary of it, doesn't mean that human nature wasn't always in full force regalia behaving as it always has, when at its lowest ebb.

Yes - I remember it well - too bad it isn't still that way.

we used to be able to ride our bikes all over town - all hours of the day and until we had to be in for curfew and not worry about somebody shooting us or kidnapping us. Now - 8 year olds have cell phones so that they can call for help if they have problems walking home from school - and I live in a town of 5600 so it's not like in the big cities. I feel sorry for those kids and their parents - must be awful walking in fear all the time

We use to live across the street from a city park and could be out till after dark playing and we were safe. I have to say though that I was still approached by a stranger for a ride home and some other stuff happened, but it is not as bad as it is nowadays.
