Ive got the LG Chocolate phone and Im not sure if its similar to your phone but the way i do it is I first play the song i want from "my stuff" then go onto options>set as ringtone.

well to answer this question, there has to be a specific cell phone. By this i mean that different cell phones have different ways of doing this. The most common one, however, is by going to the playlist, picking the song you want and going on the options, (try to find "Set as", "apply as") and you select one of those and select as ringtone. Hope it works! :-)
