Not all of them are and the men can be just as materialistic as the women. I think a lot of it has to do with celebrity culture and media. The media pays too much attention to overpriviledged people and makes it seem mainstreem to have all those clothes, jewelry, fancy toys, and big houses.
Personally, I wish people would not place so much value on material goods and consume less! It bothers me that the norm is to spend $200 or more on a damn purse and $200 dollar jeans.
But I know for a fact that material goods do not make people happier. I have embraced the minimalist lifestyle and am actually much happier with less clutter in my life.
Miriam: Interesting. According to you I am materialistic. I bet you have more crap in your home than I do. I don't even have pictures on my wall and the only jewelry I have is my wedding ring. I got married in somebody's house and I didn't have a honeymoon.
Marcelo: You've got it backwards. Usually it's the men in a society that force women to be dependent upon them so they can control them.

It's all about keeping up with the Jones' to some women here. It makes me sick to my stomach when I see one of those ugly $400+/- designer purses. It's all about "Look what I have, aren't I just sooo amazing? I'm so better than you."
To the comment below, not all Americans are materialistic. I learned that material possessions and status don't equal happiness. I'm one of the few and, trust me, most other people here think I'm really weird for not being materialistic..that I don't go out and spend big bucks to get my hair done (I cut it myself), I don't get my nails done, or wear designer clothes. That's why I never had many friends growing up, because I didn't have "nice" things. My parents didn't want to raise me to be materialistic. It's really a sad culture if you ask me.

Give any group of people lots of disposable income and many of them will turn out to be materialistic. Being American and/or female has nothing to do with it.
Better question: Why do so many men on GWS make false generalizations about women, while some of us have no problem finding proper sane women? If all you can "attract" is materialistic women, here's a newsflash: YOU SIMPLY AREN'T ATTRACTIVE TO WOMEN, MATERIALISTIC OR OTHERWISE.
EDIT: I think my answer looks a bit nasty. Let me say that men who find they are surrounded by materialistic women, are usually in that situation because they try to lure women with material things. This is repulsive to normal women, and even materialistic women still don't respect it. Attract women with yourself, not your things, and you will find women who are attracted to *you*.

Women are greedy and materialist leeches in any part of the world. This is their true nature, because in any place or time they demand that men protect and provide them.

I was a blue collar worker and even though I have been told I'm good looking and I am in damn good shape as I go to the gym everyday for 2 hours women look down on me.

They have consumerism shoved down their throats from the time they're little girls. They're made to feel like if they don't have the right clothes, hair, body, skin, house, car, etc... then society will see them as inconsequential or a "loser", and their value will be diminshed.
It's the same for American men but not nearly as bad.

Because America is the land of plenty, and most folks here are raised to believe that they should have more and better.
It doesn't always make them happy though, but for some, that's the way it is.

They learned it from men who shaped the American economy and the materialistic society we live in. Capitalists back in the late 1800's and early 1900's, men like Edison, Rockerfeller, Carnegie, mostly men who came from other countries to become rich in America, taught us well how to consume eight times more than anyone else in the world today.
