I havea 4.3 GPA, am taking 5 APs in a hard military academic prep boarding school. I have the highest leadership position in my military school and JROTC. I am also class vice-president and ASB officer. I am involved with Boy Scouts, Beta, Key, and Lions Club and other service clubs. I am a team captain of varsity track, CC, and rifle team. I have won many military and academic honors. My highest SAT score is 1850 and ACT score is 28. Is it possible for me to get to Stanford, Johns Hopkins, U Penn, Cornell, Duke, Emory, or any of the Ivys?

The SAT is only one factor that a school uses to decide acceptance. Your SAT score is not stellar, but the rest of your credentials sound exceptional.

Spend extra time filling out each application, and send in EXACTLY what they ask for. For instance if they want an essay, make sure it is not only good, but also meets their criteria. For example. if they ask for a 500 word essay don't send 1000 words. They are trying to see it you can organize your thoughts and write coherently.

You sound like a good catch, and I expect at least one of these schools will see that.

Emory seems like a weird throw in choice to your list, you're definitely in there. The others will be awfully tough because of your test scores, but if anyone can overcome that factor, you sound like the person to do it.

I would suggest retaking that SAT and trying to bump it up a little higher. I think if you apply to every school on your list, you'll get Emory, WL at Duke, possible WL at Cornell and Johns Hopkins, out at the others. But that's a wild guess especially about JHU.

Good luck!

For many schools, you can look up a report called the "Common Data Set" online. This is a long document including information about the incoming freshman class, such as SAT scores. You can compare yourself to the ranges of SAT scores they accepted last year and you'll get a pretty good idea of your chances.

To find the Common Data Set simply google the name of the school and the words "common data set".

Also, you can contact the Admissions department of any school for further questions.
