Getting a degree in counseling psychology (mft). If I can't afford to take an unpaid (or low paid) internship and decide not to become licensed (just get the degree)...what areas can I use that degree in?

I have an MA in counseling and I'm working on licensure right now -- doing one of those internships you mentioned!

With your degree, I would try to get a job in HR with a corporation, or with an outplacement or placement service as a career counselor -- you will have the opportunity to administer and interpret all the various skills and personality assessment tests they give, and make recommendations to people in career transitions or in a hiring process.

If you happen to get a job doing this with someone who is an LPC, your work might count toward your license, as well -- I know it could here, but I'm not sure about the laws in CA.

Good luck

If you posess a degree - or any other qualification - then you'll already be in advace of of the bunch when it comes to looking for professions. My friend has a degree and he wasn't sure what direction to go with it, but he unearthed some good instruction on the site in the resource box below which aided him to settle that he wanted to be a lab assistant. There is a lot of guidance on the site regarding other professions.

Case management, some mental health jobs, multisystemic therapy...I highly recommend doing whatever you can to get the license. I have a master's in psych. In my state, my degree was not licenseable when I graduated and it was really hard to find a job. Now I am back for the PhD.

I have been researching this same issue myself, as I am studying for a bachelors degree in psychology and will probably get a masters. So far, it seems the major winners for this degree would be elementary, middle and high school teacher, community college professor, online university professor and community college counselor. There are other counseling positions you would probably qualify for, but the LPC (licensed professional counselor) designation is becoming the requirement a lot more for these.
