... for my money, it's Zep's John Paul Jones, followed closely by Paul McCartney (in his heyday).

Fran Sheehan from all those Boston songs! He brought that "Motown" bass thing to Rock...if you listen. He weaves the bassline under and over, and nails the pocket.

Hmm....well Dimebag was not really a bassist, and Paul McCartney actually is regarded as a Great bass player, and Stanley Clark- He is considered a genius!. So I guess I am going with John Paul Jones- very underrated, and a fantastic bass player.

John Entwistle. He is hands down the best bassist of all time. Listen to any of the Who's songs and listen to the Ox's bass. He was (unfortunately he died in 2002) so incredibly talented. He was also the anchor for the Who's entergetic shows. But yeah, Paul is pretty good too.

I completely agree with you about Paul. People praise him for his amazing songwriting, and hey, I'm right there with them. Yet, as a bassist myself, I pay close attention to his bass lines and find that they're amazing. Most definitely an underrated bassist.

I don't know about bassist, but I do know that a very underrated GUITARIST would have to be Nick Zinner, I mean really.
