Hedge fund managers are at the very top with some earning over a billion dollars a year in commissions. CEO's of large companies, money manages, and business owners can all earn in the 100's millions. Sports stars and entertainers usually get in the 10's of millions although a few make more. All of these are not sure things. If you work hard and become a successful professional (doctor , lawyer etc) you can count on earning in the 100's of thousands.

In absolute terms, the superstars of the entertainment world, the CEOs and the capitalists (living on wealth) are the highest paid. If you want an accessbile occupation though, you'd better look at finance, law, medicine and consulting.

Venture capitalist and inventor, prob have the highest potential for wealth. As per "typical" occupations... lawyer, surgeon and investment banker can make loads.
