Each of the books of the Earth's Children series is slightly different from the others. Some of the difference may be due to Ayla's age during the book. She was a child in the 1st book, and a teen in the 2nd. But there are similarities in the writing, too. In each book, the descriptive writing is extensive. Jean Auel provides nearly academic information on tanning hides, or knapping flint, or the construction of shelter.

The Plains Of Passage was an epic adventure that showed how Ayla's upbringing by the Clan gave her superior knowledge for survival. This one made Ayla a bit larger than life. So, if you compare it to The Shelters Of Stone, this last book presents a more average Ayla. Overall I see no reason to doubt Jean Auel wrote the book.

I had't noticed any difference. However, it's possible that her style changes a little according to the general situation, and The Shelters of Stone focuses more on interpersonal relations and the spirit world than her others. In additon, it may make a subtle difference that Ayla is in a new environment, but one in which she expects to spend the rest of her life.

Does anyone have an inkling when the projected sixth and last novel is coming out? There ARE some loose ends to be tied up. Remember a dream Ayla had back in volume 1 or 2? And remember how "Ayla" is simply the best the Clan people could do with her name, but the woman at the clan gathering pronounced it "Aargha"? And that the blurb for Clan of the Cave Bear said that one day the Clan people would worship her as a goddess?

I agree it was a little different but the human race was also evolving through out the series. Jean does all her own research for this series. I believe she wrote the book. That is why it took years for each book to come out. I heard a rumor that she is getting up in years and has not been in the best of health. I'm hoping for one more book.

Since she is definately capable of writing, and this is her territory, I seriously doubt that she would let anyone else tinker with the world she created.

I wouldn't.

Clan of the Cave Bear was her first novel. Her style went through subtle changes with Valley of the Horses, and The Mammoth Hunters.
If Shelters of Stone has a more noticible difference it is probably just a natural growth of her writing talent.

Look at any prolific writer, and you will see a change in style as time goes on, especially in the beginning.
