Folks who listen to COUNTRY MUSIC won't know much about Elton John.

It's about the singer's relationship with his blind, wounded war veteran brother. Elton John took out a verse in the song that explained their relationship more clearly. He probably did it to shorten the playing time of the song so it would be played on AM radio but it has confused millions of listeners ever since. Many people think it's about gay lovers.

A beautiful tune and a timeless classic there ...

Daniel is the fictional story of a blinded Vietnam veteran who
comes home after the war and everybody wants him to be a hero, but all he wants is to be left alone. So he takes off for Spain to get away from it all. The story is told from the point of view of his younger brother, who misses him and would like him to come back home.

It's not a true story, just an account of what crippled Vietnam veterans had to go through when they came home from the war. It is inspired by news coverage of the war that Bernie Taupin (Elton's lyricist) watched in the early 70s.

It was supposed to a be about a Vietnam Nam vet who left America and went to Spain but the original lyrics were changed. To me it is a song about losing a loved one. Great song either way.
