Anybody else think that it's a pointless law (in some states)? I'm all for living and being happy yada yada, but there are people that aren't... and I would think that it's their choice to do that... eventhough it'd be rough for their families & friends. As long as they don't bring others into it.

It's a pointless law if you succeed, but if you don't succeed it gives the state the power to have you evaluated, and force treatment on you.

But I agree if you want of off yourself, it should be your choice.

I could go on a rant about this but I won't.

Regardless of who the person is, suicide is killing someone. It's the same as murder. If we condone suicide, we might as well just tell people we have no respect for life and death. It's not about letting people make choices. There are some choices we dont allow people to make, especially in such an unclear state of mind. People who are suicidal are certainly not in the frame of mind to be making any big decisions.

Yes, we have choices, but we have laws and morals that dictate what some of those choices should be. Any rational person can respect those. An unrational person must face the consequences of those actions, and the laws that guide them.

The penalty for suicide should be capital punishment.

:) Actually, only a few states have laws against suicide. Many states prohibit attempted suicide--primarily so they may intervene. What the few states (Maryland is one--I believe) that outlaw suicide use as penalties for the act--I can't guess. Fines? Imprisonment of the corpse? It does seem silly.

I also don't see how that helps. Oh, suicide is illegal? I guess that means I can't do it then. I'll just have to continue living.

Razors pain you, rivers are damp.
Acids stain you, drugs cause cramp.
Guns aren't lawful (in Maryland), nooses give.
Gas smells awful--you might as well live.

So... You're saying that you would stand by and let a man jump off a bridge without trying to talk him out of it?
I'm sure you would try to help.
And here is what I'm trying to get at:
No, I don't think it is a pointless law. If someone fails at it, he/she can be incarcerated and hopefully get the help needed. Getting a suicidal man or woman, boy or girl the help they need is probably the underlying reason for the law.

The presumption that someone is mentally incapable of making a decision if they attempt suicide is not warranted without evidence. It doesn't take much to require a medical examination for a suicidal person without making them a criminal.

As a point of principle, the argument from self-ownership and liberty is too strong to make this law justifiable.

They cant help but bring others into it. Someone is going to find the body. Now what they should do is wipe out thier auto into an overpass support at a high rate of speed, then the relatives can always think they just lost control.

It's a stupid law because suicide is the only kind of murder that no one has ever been tried for and convicted of. I once saw a show with a bunch of doctors talking about "completed suicides". As if a suicide is a suicide if it's not complete! Morons.

The premise in law is that anyone attempting to end their own life is not rational at the time, therefor they arent capable of making the decision. Being against the law gives society a tool to use, they can arrest them and get them medical or psychiatric health.......

Nothing should be Illegal that dose not deprive anyone else of life, liberty or property.

As long as you have money set aside to take care of your body and debts. Kill your self, you are not violating anyones rights.
