it is blood and tissue from the lining of your uterus that is un-used because youre not pregnant, therefore needing to leave the body through the nearest opening and by gravity it comes out of the vaginal opening. when someone is pregnant the lining is needed to support the babies development so the lining stays there instead of going out.

about every month, your body releases an egg from the ovaries. the ovaries are two little places that make eggs for your body. these eggs aren't like the eggs you eat. they're smaller then a grain of sand. so an egg is released and travels down a tube called the fallopian tube to your uterus. the uterus is also called your womb, or the place where babies grow within a woman's body. as the egg travels down the fallopian tube, your uterus is busy making a lining for the egg. it's a lining of blood and tissue that protect the egg and make the uterus the best place for it. the egg remains in the uterus for a few days. while the egg is in the uterus, a sperm can reach it. but if no sperm reaches the egg, it gets old and so does the lining of the uterus. so your body flushes out the uterus lining and the egg out your vagina. the flushed lining is your period. if a sperm does reach the egg and everything goes right, then the fertilized egg attaches itself to the uterus lining and grows into a baby.

so your period blood comes from the inside of your uterus, basically
