After the honeymoon phase wears down, the newlyweds discover that there really is a thing called REAL LIFE. This involves paying bills, working, disagreeing about things, etc. All of this is normal behavior for everyone. We all do it. But since you and your spouse appear to be at odds, it's probably because they have started seeing the REAL you and their REAL self. This is the time when people either improve or begin to deteriorate. Either they want to live life in the past, perhaps they were self-absorbed to begin with, who knows? A person who improves with time has a good sense of themselves and can adapt to change easily. They are considerate and will empathize with their spouse. Good Luck!

Very good question and folks should realize this before they marry. People will change (usually for the worse). Make sure you really really really know the person you're about to marry and DO NOT rush or get pressured into it. There is nothing pretty about a divorce.

I'm not sure people really change that much. In my experience, the start of a relationship is exciting, and we tend to adapt to our current partner. We also tend to do things according to what society ("other people") think we should do, and what we feel is right at the time. I'm not sure that really answers your question, so I will leave you with a question of my own: How many couples would have simply had an affair, no matter how lengthy, if not for pressures from family/friends/religion??

I wish that I knew the answer to that question. My husband has changed for the worse in the short time that we have been married. He started changing the first day that we were married and I sometimes have regretted being married to him. I am now married for the second time. It would really kill him if I ever left.

There's lots of reasons why people change, for better or worse. Probably the biggest reason why they change for the worse is because of selfishness.

And the best reason I can think of for the better is because they become self-less, and put others before themselves.

Humans are evolutionary beings. We are always changing. Every decision we make on a daily basis effects some change in who we are. No one stays the same. It's inevitable.

"A woman marries a man thinking he'll change, a man marries a woman thinking she won't change". I think when expectations aren't met, that's when the problems begin.

Change never stops...I think in marriage you have to try and change together.
