Is intelligence really not that important? I mean, academic intelligence. Sure, I don't recite books from memory and believe everything my teachers tell me, but I still know I'm academically smart, and so are most of my friends.

But a few of my friends aren't, and it was one of those friends that told me the one thing I've been trying to get someone to say to me for as long as I can remember. But I don't think he even realized it.

I just thought it was amazing that someone who talks like an uneducated stereotypical public-school student could figure something out that my "educated" friends couldn't.

By the way, what he said was "You're smart."

Intelligence has nothing to do with learning things from books.

The true measure of Intelligence is how well you can use your intellect to help you to deal with the situations that confront you in your life.

Some of the most book smart people that I ever met were retarded when it came to life.

Dear heart there is a little thing known as common sense. Not everything comes from books and why on earth should someone be less acute if he/she is from a public school? An academic education is a great thing and necessary but is useless if you don't have the sense to come in out of the rain. Good ole boys can sometimes be smart too. Good luck and keep looking for the truth. The quest for knowledge doesn't end with a 'sheepskin'.

"Academic intelligence" as you call it, IS important in some ways. It sure helps you get good grades, and diplomas which help you get higher paying jobs, BUT, as far as how it effects your ability to get along with others and have friends, well, it's not all that important, unless the people you want to befriend are more formally educated. But, what I have found, even with my 3 college degrees, is that when I go around and talk to people in a variety of settings, and want to become friends or friendly with some, my "academic intelligence" is oftentimes a stumbling block for me. So, it's got its place. It's just not necessary for everything in life, and sometimes works against you. God Bless you.

Intelligence IS important, especially the KIND of intelligence you have. People tend to talk about "street smarts" and "book smarts." One is the ability and experience to DO things skillfully, and the other is a wide knowledge of facts and figures. It is best to have both.
A surgeon is a good illustration. We want him to be handy, even artistic with a knife and to have all the other experience which will keep him or her from making a ghastly mistake. At the same time we want that surgeon to be a walking encyclopedia of all things anatomical and medical, so he or she does not cut out the wrong organ! So yes, academic intelligence, mastering facts, does matter.

No you are normal. Most times we don't realize how value we are until we fall in love for the first time and see ourselves through someone else's eyes. But a gracious person will do the same thing.

I agree that intelligence isn't that important. Wisdom is what's important. You can know the exact length, width, age, and material of both roads at a fork by just looking at them, but that doesn't matter if you don't know which one you should take.

Most of what we think we think is actually trained responses, not something we put together at a that moment. So how well you admit truth into your mind will play a large role in your ability.

My definition of intelligence is...

Intelligence are those disposable mental faculties that we are not otherwise equipped to use productively.

importance is what you make it. You can go into a public school and see the kinds that just think school is a waste of time, and it is not even remotely important. Then you can see the kids where school IS their life, and hence of the upmost importance.
