I have an old beer-garden table that I want to clean up. It was treated & painted, but it has some rust spots that have come thru. It is at least 40 years old made of some light-weight metal (I don't know what). What is the best stuff to clean & treat this with please? I then want to re-paint it with something? Also it has metal tube legs with open ends. I will put rubber stoppers on these, but should I worry about rust that may be already inside those tube legs? It is special & I want to keep it - came from the OLD Templestowe Pub beer garden - when it was just an old pub.... Ah, yes, memories....

first get rid of all the rust by sanding the whole table. then if it was really rusty at some parts it will be noticed that some metal flaked off, u can use fiber glass to cover up the flaked off parts from the rust. after applying fiber glass to cover up any holes or parts flaked off from the rust sand the table again because the fiberglass will be bumpy but after sanding will be really smooth and look like as if its 1 piece with the table. u can also close the open ends of the tube legs with fiber glass then sand it from the outside it will look like as if it never had an open end. after all that u can paint it, but i think there's special kind of paint u should use u can just ask the any1 that works at the place where ur buying the paint from he would tell u what u need to use to prevent corrosion.

Hope this helps. good luck.

Go to Home Depot and get some rustolium rust stopper. Clean it with wire brush and a little emory cloth sand type paper. Then use the rust stopper. Paint after allowed drying time.
Best of Luck Great memory item. Have fun and Happy New Year!

Use a steel brush to clean off most of the rust, the fine metal-rated sandpaper to get a smooth finish before painting. Would not worry about the legs, might just use spray paint in there to seal it. I have cleaned off really rusty metal before, and if you sand it well it gives a good smooth finish when painted.

Use navel jelly to take off as much rust as you can, steel wool will help, then clean it real good and use rustolium paint on it. That will convert any rust that is still there into another compound.

I would remove all the old paint with paint stripper gel..sand it and primer before re- painting and I think I would remove the old rubber first too.

If its ornate take it to blacksmiths and have it shot blasted, then prime twice with red oxide and paint it with your choice. Spray interior with waxoil and i can guarantee it will never rust again
