H2 + Fe3O4 -> Fe + H2O

first find out what we have on each side so...

Left Side:
Hydrogen (h) = 2
Iron (Fe) = 3
Oxygen (o) = 4

Right Side:
(h) = 2
(Fe) = 1
(o) = 1

So first well sort out the iron (Fe) cos thats the easiest. since there are 3 times as many (Fe)s on the left are there are on the right, put a 3 in front of the (Fe) on the right. this gives us:

H2 + Fe3O4 -> 3Fe + H2O

now on either side we have:

Left Side:
Hydrogen (h) = 2
Iron (Fe) = 3
Oxygen (o) = 4

Right Side:
(h) = 2
(Fe) = 3
(o) = 1

so now lets sort the (o).

there are 4 times as many on the left, so well have the multply the (o)s on the right by 4. so we get:

H2 + Fe3O4 -> 3Fe + 4H2O

now we have the oxygens sorted out, but in doing so we have inadverdatly given ourself too many (h)s. there are now 4 times as many (h)s on the right, so we'll just multiply the (h)s on the left by 4. so the final equation is:

4H2 + Fe3O4 -> 3Fe + 4H2O.

the cooeficent is just the number in front, and that is 4.

sorry if u didnt need all that, just thought id make sure =P

answer is 4.
