in the sense that selectors will want a 'keeper who can also pile on the runs, he's there not only for his keeping but as a batsman too. and a very good one.

yeah i think he has at least in what Australia expects out of a keeper,i mean the days of a keeper just being a keeper and OK with the bat are gone now we expect a keeper to be a good keeper and basically a rated batsman as well-look at brad haddin basically in the same mould as Gilly-good keeper, bit hitter, capable of big scores

and i think other countries are starting to go the same way with dohni, boucher,MC cullum etc.

Gilly has certaintly revolutionised the role of the wicket keeper, their importance to the side and what is expected of them.

Prior to Gilly's debut, a good wicket keeper was mainly one who had exceptional glove skills. Batting was not too important, as long as they could contribute some handy runs and hang around with a recognised batsman before exposing the tail. Its a testament of those days and that era when Ian Healy's batting record was considered exceptional for a keeper, and then compare it to Gilly's.

After Gilly came in, he set a new standard. Keepers now not only had to have to good glove skills, they had to be able to be a 7th genuine batsman in the side, who averaged at least 35+, if not 40 or more.

It is interesting to see how many countries are tryong to get a keeper EXACTLY like Gilly. By this I mean not only are they looking for a keeper who is a great batsman, but who is also able to score their runs quickly. Look at McCullum, Geraint Jones, Prior, Dhoni - all very agressive batsmen. It is this that held back the likes of Robbie Hart from NZ, Chris Read and also delayed Prasanna Jayawardene's presence in teh SL side - they did not score enough runs at a quick enough pace.

Most of the teams prefer a Wicket-keeper-Batsman rather than a pure wicket keeper.

no i dont think so.he is doing the same job Rod Marsh and Ian Healy have done for australian cricket..i suppose it all depends on how loud or quiet they are as W/C..he stands out to me more than the other 2 because he wont shut up behind the stumps..he is a team leader, loves his voice to be heard, and he just loves to rev our guys up..i love hearing gilly behind the stumps,at least you get a laugh from him...
nearly number 1 W/C in the world..Sydney test next week he will break Bouchers record..

Yes he has, it is no longer acceptable for a keeper who during his career might score one or two centuries, Countries now require their keepers to be able to make huge scores, that's why now they are considered all rounders in the same sense that bowler/batsmen are considered all rounders.

Look at Dhoni, Boucher just to name a few.

no I dont think so...just the fact that he bats like a champion...keepers have been doing this for years...just no one quite as good as Gillie...

I don't quite understand your question.I can't see that he's changed anything much, he's very much after the style of Healy & Marsh, though he's a better batsman.
