It protects the spinal chord. The spinal chord transmits signals from your brain to other parts of your body (such as your arms and legs). If this gets damaged or broken, you could be paralyzed or could die. Since the chord is easy to damage, the vertebrae (parts of the backbone) serve to protect it.
