I know probably seems like a REALLY dumb question - but I want to do it "safely," I just got a new PC, and I need to install a card into a PCI slot. For some ASININE reason, the PC manufacturer has TWO pieces of metal that are NOT cut, and are "attached" to the PC-case... I had the same issue with my old PC, when trying to install an extra hard-drive!
My question is HOW do you safely cut / twist the remaining metal pieces of the PCI-slot covers, so that I can insert a PCI card??? Thanks in advance for this rather basic question...

Hi everyone. Thanks for the replies! My PCI-slot graphics card is (ahem) 64MB... Being that my NEW PC has PCI-E x16 and PCI-E slots available, I'm going to run out to Circuit City and/or Best Buy and try and find either a Diamond ATI Radeon Pro 16x PCI-E X1650 512MB (CC) or a XfX Fatality GeForce 8500 GT 512MB 16x PCI-E (BB) video card.

While I don't know the details of your case, if your slot over is not the "L" bracket" but a factory metal piece covering a slot until it's used for the first time, they are usually attached by tiny points of metal, like a perforation. If it looks like a perforated edge, then the typical procedure is to bend the piece of metal back and fourth until it breaks off. The use of a needle-nose pliers is recommended for this. Some cheap computer cases come with factory metal pieces that cover the slot opening with a "performation" along one edge. Once this factory metal piece is removed, you may replace with a screw-in metal cover (regular computer slot cover in the form of an 'L' shaped metal piece) or PCI card.

Yeah sometimes they don't put screw cover slots on there, but instead leave it as a little panel that has 2 or 4 little welds holding it on the case. Best thing is to just bend them back and forth untill the motion weakens the joint enough for a clean snap away. If it's welded on both sides it could be more of a hassle to get it to to do that so you'll need to use what ever you can find lieing around to severe the joints on one side before bending.

This is an old questions but when working on my emachine 1831 -01 this question came up
I removed the covering by first opening the holding door, then I took a Phillips flat head screw driver to the side not welded down and carefully pried the covering off by going back and forth like a swinging door. After 15 tries it popped out. I hope this helps anyone else

if you take off the cover off your system, there are 2 screws holding the PCI slot cover in place, simply unscrew them and remove. If there are no screws, just weld, bend them to a 90 degree angle, then get some wire snips and snip the covers off. Sand down the rough edges making sure you cover your motherboard, processor etc...with cloth that is free of static. Be sure you shut down your system and unplug everything before you do this.

Most of them twist out.
I know you know that, but it is an odd situation.
Maybe you could take it to a heat/air conditioning vent assembler/installer.
He would have the proper tools to get it open for you.
